AVIF gets its efficiency from AV1, the same royalty-free video codec used for a lot of modern video streaming, applied here to a single still frame instead of a video. Rather than treating each 8x8 block of pixels in isolation the way JPEG does, AV1's intra-frame prediction guesses each block from its neighbors using dozens of directional patterns, then compresses whatever's left with more sophisticated entropy coding. That's a genuinely different approach from JPEG's, not a rebrand of it, and it's why an AVIF photo typically looks just as good, or better, at a meaningfully smaller file size.
That same newness is also the problem "convert avif to jpg" searches are usually trying to solve. AVIF has been around for a few years now, and most current browsers decode it fine, but a lot of desktop image viewers, older content management systems, and social platforms still don't open it, or reject it outright on upload. JPG has no such problem: it's been the default photo format since 1992, and there isn't a device, browser, or printer anywhere that doesn't already know how to open it.

Only if that fails, an older browser, or a Safari version without full AVIF support, does it quietly load a WebAssembly decoder just for that one file. When you need this
A CMS or platform that rejects .avif uploads
Plenty of content management systems, e-commerce platforms, and social sites simply don't have .avif on their accepted list yet, even though the photo itself opens fine everywhere else. Converting to JPG sidesteps the rejection without touching a single pixel.
Sending a photo to someone who might not be able to open it
If you're not sure whether the person on the other end has a browser or app that decodes AVIF, JPG removes the guesswork. It's still the one format that's about as close to guaranteed-to-open as photo formats get.
Software with no AVIF support at all
Plenty of desktop photo viewers, older operating systems, and legacy editing software have no AVIF decoder built in whatsoever. A quick convert to JPG fixes that instantly, no plugin needed.
Standardizing a mixed batch

Say your camera or a design tool exported a landscape photo as sunset.avif, and the blog platform you want to publish it on doesn't recognize the .avif extension at all.

Worth being upfront about: this conversion usually makes the file bigger, not smaller. AVIF's AV1-based compression is genuinely more efficient than JPEG's at the same visual quality, so converting to JPG trades away some of that efficiency in exchange for a format that opens absolutely everywhere. If file size matters more than compatibility, keeping the original AVIF is often the better call; this tool exists for the moments when compatibility is what you actually need.

JPEG hasn't fundamentally changed since 1992: it splits a photo into 8x8 blocks, runs each one through a discrete cosine transform, and discards the visual detail human eyes notice least, then compresses what's left with Huffman coding. It's a simple, decades-old recipe, and that simplicity is exactly why every browser, phone, and printer already decodes it without a second thought.
AVIF is a considerably newer design, inheriting AV1's intra-frame prediction: each block is predicted from its neighbors using dozens of directional patterns before whatever's left is compressed further, and it supports 10-bit and 12-bit color depth plus real alpha transparency, neither of which JPEG's 8-bit, opaque-only pipeline can offer. That extra sophistication is why AVIF typically beats JPEG on file size at equivalent quality, and also why it's still catching up on universal support. Converting to JPG trades some of that efficiency away for a format guaranteed to open absolutely everywhere.

Not always, and that's exactly why this tool exists in two stages. It checks for your browser's own AVIF support first, since most current browsers (Chrome, Edge, recent Firefox and Safari) already have one built in, and only falls back to a small WebAssembly decoder, loaded automatically for just that one file, when your specific browser can't read the format on its own. There's no separate download or setting to configure either way.
It refuses to convert it, on purpose. Animated AVIF files carry a different internal brand marker than still ones, and this tool checks for that before attempting any decode at all. If it finds one, it explains that plainly instead of quietly encoding just the first frame as a JPG and calling the job finished, since that would technically produce a file but throw away everything except one frame of your animation without telling you.
A small amount, since JPG is a lossy format and any re-encode involves some compression. At the default 90% quality, that loss is generally invisible at normal viewing sizes. Push the slider closer to 100% for a photo you plan to print large or edit further, where every bit of detail counts more.
Never. There's no server anywhere in this tool's path, by design: your browser decodes the AVIF (natively or via the WebAssembly fallback) and encodes the JPG using nothing but its own built-in capabilities and a background worker thread, so the tab never freezes while it works. Don't take that on faith either: your browser's own DevTools will show you exactly what network requests a page makes, and converting a photo here won't produce one carrying any image data.
